Brooklyn Ends 2011 With 70-64 Victory Over Rutgers-Camden

Camden, NJ --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team traveled to Camden, NJ earlier today and came away with a 70-64 win over Rutgers-Camden in a non-conference tilt. With the win, the Bulldogs end the 2011 portion of its 2011-2012 schedule with a 7-2 overall record, while the Scarlet Raptors finish the calendar year with a 2-7 overall mark.

The Bulldogs were led once again by senior guard Tyshawn Russell who topped all scorers with a game-high 30 points on 6-for-14 shooting from the field, including going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Russell did most of his damage from the free throw line, converting on 15-of-22. The game marked the fourth time this season that Russell has scored at least 30 points and the sixth time that he has led BC in scoring. The Jamaica, NY native also added a game-best five steals and three rebounds to his stat line.

Junior forward Kavon Baker recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, to go along with four steals, while senior guard Amil John chipped in with 13 points and four steals. Junior forward Steven Grant contributed with 10 points and seven rebounds coming off the bench.

For Rutgers-Camden, Mike Payne finished with a team-leading 16 points, to go with eight rebounds, while Anthony Solano added 14 points. Kyle Bowman and Josh Stevens each chipped in with 10 points apiece coming off the bench. Stevens also tied for the game-high in rebounds grabbing 12 caroms to register a double-double.

The fierce BC defense forced the Scarlet-Raptors into 26 turnovers, while committing 20 turnovers of their own. The Bulldogs, who are currently ranked second in the nation in steals (16.3 steals per game) and fourth in turnover margin (9.8), recorded 15 steals in the game.

As a team, Brooklyn shot 42.1% (24-57) from the field, including 33.3% (4-12) from three, while also shooting 42.9% (18-42) from the charity stripe.

Rutgers-Camden shot 36.5% (23-63) from the field and 25.0% (3-12) from beyond the arc, while converting 62.5% (15-24) from the line.

Brooklyn returns to action on Wednesday, January 4th, as the Bulldogs will play host to City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) South Division rival York College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm at the West Quad Center.
