TIFFIN, Ohio—Ian Jackson poured in a game-high 34 points and Scott Rogers scored 28 points of his own to lead Trine (Ind.) University to an 86-76 victory over Heidelberg University today in a non-conference game at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Berg.

Junior second-team All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Harvest Prep) led the Student Princes (2-6, 1-3 Ohio Athletic Conference) with 20 points on a six-of-12 shooting performance. Sophomore forward Victor Fortkamp (St. Henry) added 12 points and seven rebounds and senior guard Darion Capers (Clayton/Madison-Trotwood) scored 10 points and passed for a game-high five assists. Sophomore guard Lee Renner (Gibsonburg) added a career-high nine points.

Jackson was 14-of-24 shooting from the field and Scott Rogers was one rebound away from a double-double for the Thunder (6-2).

Trine took an early, 2-0 lead, but Heidelberg went on a 10-2 run and took a 10-4 lead at the 17:03 mark when Givner made a jumper.

A jumper by Tim Pearcy tied the game at 12-12 with 14:19 on the clock to cap an 8-2 run.

Junior guard Quintin Aden (Canal Winchester/Harvest Prep) gave the Berg the lead back when he nailed a three-pointer at the 13:02 mark, but Trine retook a 16-15 lead less than a minute later with a lay-up by Jackson and completed a 10-0 run that spanned three minutes when Chris Kent made a fast break lay-up at 9:46 to give the Thunder a 22-15 advantage.

The Student Princes began to chip into the Trine lead and tied the game at 28-28 at the 3:20 mark as Renner canned a triple, capping a 13-6 jaunt.

The Thunder outscored Heidelberg, 14-5, to close the half and entered the intermission with a 42-33 edge.

Trine took its first double-digit lead to open the second half, as Jackson made a lay-up to extend the Thunder lead to 44-33. Trine led by as many as 15 points in the second half on two separate occasions, with the last coming at the 16:08 mark when Rogers made a lay-up, was fouled, and converted the three-point play at the charity stripe.

The Student Princes cut the deficit back to eight points at 56-48 when senior forward Zane Wildermuth (Botkins) made a pair of free throws.

The Thunder took its largest lead of the second half at 70-57 following a three-point play from Dustin Hall with 8:55 on the clock.

Heidelberg again cut the deficit to as few as six points, with Givner making one of two free throws with 3:37 on the clock, but Trine again built a double-digit lead with less than 30 seconds to play to secure the victory.

Trine shot 55.6 percent (35-of-63) from the field and 72.7 percent (16-of-22) from the free throw line, turned the ball over just 12 times and outscored the Berg, 30-8, in the paint.

The Student Princes shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the field and a season-high 81.8 percent (27-of-33) from the charity stripe. Heidelberg's 27 made free throws were also a season high.

The Berg will enjoy an 11-day break from competition before participating in the Mose Hole Classic on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 29-30 in Wooster, Ohio. Heidelberg will match up with Hiram College at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and with tournament host The College of Wooster at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
