HEIDELBERG: ‘Berg Men’s Hoops Post Five Season Highs En Route to 30-Point Win Over Waynesburg (Pa.)

TIFFIN, Ohio—Junior second-team All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Harvest Prep) score a team-high 13 points and sophomore guard Mike Petrie (Columbus/Beechcroft) added 10 points of his own as the Heidelberg University men's basketball team posted season-highs in five categories and coasted to an 86-54 win over Waynesburg (Pa.) University tonight in a non-conference game at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio. The victory notched consecutive wins for the Berg for the first time since it reeled off three straight from Jan. 22-29, 2011 and the 32-point margin of victory was the highest for the team under fourth-year head coach Anthony Gholson.

In addition to Givner and Petrie for the Student Princes (3-5, 1-3 Ohio Athletic Conference), junior honorable mention All-OAC forward Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) tallied eight markes and seven rebounds, senior guard C.J. Powell (Detroit, Mich./Bishop Foley) added seven points, and freshman forward Chris Jefferies (Concord/Painesville Riverside) scored three points, but pulled down a game and season-high eight rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets (2-8) were led by Larry Alexander with a game-high 17 points on a six-of-13 shooting night, including five-of-11 from three-point range. Jacob Fleegle added nine points and six rebounds, and Kurt Bonnett tallied seven points and nine boards.

Heidelberg began the game on a 7-0 run, capped at the 18:06 mark when Petrie made a lay-up on a fast break following his three-pointer just seconds before.

Waynesburg went on a 7-4 run to close the gap to 11-4 when Jason Propst hit a lay-up in the paint with 15:02 on the clock.

The Berg extended its lead to 16-7, as Powell was fouled on a made lay-up and sank a free throw to convert the three-point play.

Givner then led Student Princes on a 12-4 run, scoring five of the 12 points, and Heidelberg took a 28-11 advantage with 9:21 on the clock when sophomore guard Jordan Tuner (Swanton/Delta) canned a jumper.

The Tri-Color led by as many as 20 points on two separate occasions in the first half, with the last coming at the 4:32 mark when freshman guard Nike Wake (Goshen) made one of two foul shots, giving the Berg a 36-16 lead.

The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to 39-26, going on a 10-3 run that was capped at the 1:39 mark as Kurt Bonnett hit a lay-up.

Senior guard Pat Barrett (Lakewood) sent the Student Princes into halftime with 43-26 lead with a three-pointer with just over one minute on the clock.

Davis immediately increased the 'Berg lead to 19 points to start the second half when he canned a jumper in the paint, sending the Student Princes to a 45-26 advantage.

Waynesburg tried to climb back in the game, cutting the deficit to 47-32 at the 17:51 mark when Fleegle made a jumper of his own.

Jefferies gave the Berg its first 20-point lead of the second half at 52-32 after he made one of two free throws at the 14:26 mark and Powell pushed the lead to 54-32 when he sank a pair of foul shots just seconds later.

The Yellow Jackets then went on a 13-3 run in just under four minutes, cutting the score to 57-45 at the 10:22 mark as Patrick Crawford hit a jumper. Larry Alexander sparked the run with a pair of three-pointers and eight points.

Heidelberg responded by going on an 8-0 run of its own to retake a 20-point lead at 65-45, capped at the 8:04 mark when Davis made a lay-up, was fouled, and converted the three-point play at the charity stripe. The Berg led by as many as 32 points down the stretch, coasting to its second straight victory.

The Student Princes shot 44.6 percent (29-of-65) from the field, including a season-high 36.8 percent (seven-of-19) from beyond the arc, and a season-high 72.4 percent (21-of-29) from the charity stripe. The Berg's seven triples and 21 made free throws were also season-highs. Five players tallied two steals and Heidelberg turned the ball over just seven times.

Waynesburg shot just 31.3 percent (21-of-67) and got to the free throw line for just 10 shots, making six of them. The Yellow Jackets turned the ball over 20 times.

Heidelberg will have a short turnaround before hosting Trine (Ind.) University on Saturday, Dec. 15. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
