COUGARS DEFEAT GALLAUDET IN 2011 GU HOLIDAY TOURNEY

Washington, D.C.- The Cougars avenged their 2010 loss to Gallaudet (63-55 11/28/10) in the 2011 GU Holiday Tournament, when they defeated the host Bison 63-43 on Saturday Nov. 26, 2011. The Cougars improved their record to 3-2 while the Bison dropped to 2-3.

The 1st half can be compared to a see-saw. The lead changed 5 times with Gallaudet leading by 6pts and MEC closing out the half with an 8pt advantage. MEC shot 42.4% from the field in the half and 23.1% from the 3pt. range. The Bison shot 35% from the field and 56.3% from the free throw line. Jovan Deare led the Cougars with 10pts in the 1st half. Danny Kelly led the Bison with 9pts. MEC led 31-23 at the break.

The 2nd half was all MEC wanted. They played hard defense forcing 13 turnovers, which led to 11 Cougar points. They led by as much as 20pts in the half. MEC shot 37.5% from the field, 37.5% from 3pt. range, and 61.1% from the free throw line (11-18). The Bison shot 28.6% from the field, 40% from 3pt. range, and 54.5% from the free throw line. Tony Sims led the Cougars with 12pts (2-3 from 3pt. range, and 4-4 from the free throw line).

For the game, MEC was led by Tony Sims. Sims poured a game high 15pts, 2 assists, and 3 steals. Jovan Deare also scored 15pts. He grabbed 4 rebounds, totalled 3 assists and a steal. Winston Douglas recorded a double double (13pts and 12 rebounds. He also tallied 2 assists, 2 blocks and 3 steals. Gallaudet was led by Danny Kelly, who scored 13pts.

MEC will play in the 2011 GU Holiday Tournament Championship Game agains the Muhlenberg College Mules at 4pm on Sunday Nov. 27, 2011.
