Box Score

FOREST GROVE – A strong 50 percent shooting performance for Pacific was not enough to overcome a torrid three-point shooting streak by Northwest (Wash.) as the Eagles rolled past the Boxers 82-63 in men's basketball action at the Stoller Center.

The Boxers (4-2) hit 21 of 42 from the field and 6 of 12 from three-point range and also managed to hit 15 of 19 from the free throw line.  Northwest (10-0), ranked 11th in the latest NAIA Division II poll, could hardly be stopped from outside.  The Eagles connected on 52.2 percent from three-point range (12-23), including seven treys in the first half, and finished at 54.7 percent from the field for the game (29-53).

David Berney (Jr., Eugene, Ore.) led Pacific with 15 points, connecting on 6 of 8 from the field and 2 of 2 from three-point range.  Colin Wester (Jr., Sherwood, Ore.) added 13 points.  Leland Devlin (Fr., Phoenix, Ariz.) came off the bench to add nine points on 3 of 3 from the field.

Ahmaad Cook led all scorers with 20 points, connecting on 8 of 12 from the field with four three-pointers.  Tyler Mendezona came off the bench to score 18, also hitting four treys.  Jordan Call finished with 17 points, knocking in three three-pointers.  Northwest forced 18 Pacific turnovers and out-rebounded the Boxers 28-23.

Pacific hung with Northwest for the first 10 minutes of the contest.  The Boxers held a three-point lead twice in the first half, the last coming on a Charles Mosley (Jr., Hillsboro, Ore.) jumper at the 14:09 mark.  Northwest took the lead for good when Call's three-pointer on their next possession started a 10-0 run.  Mendezona ended the run with his first three of the game with 9:50 left that put Northwest ahead 20-13.

The Boxers used a pair of Robby Babek (Sr., Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and a Wester three-pointer to come back within four points with 8:36 left in the stanza, but back-to-back Mendezona treys ignited a 23-11 over the rest of the half.  Jason Waltman hit the last shot with five seconds left to take a 45-29 halftime lead.  Northwest scored 16 of those points off of 10 Pacific turnovers.

Pacific scored the first four points of the second half, bringing the Boxers back to within 12 with a pair of Wester free throws a minute and a half into the stanza.  Northwest kept the heat on, pushing the lead back to 20 points, 59-39, on a Mendezona lay-in with 12:57 to go.  Cook then made it a 21-point lead when he hit another three with 9:17 left.

Northwest could never seem to put Pacific away for good until late.  The Boxers closed back to within 65-50 on Dustin Bowser's (Jr., Bellingham, Wash.) bucket with eight minutes left.  Pacific stayed right in that range until Mendezona started an 8-0 run with 3:26 left that eventually gave the Eagles a 23-point lead.

Pacific will take the next week off for final exams.  The Boxers return to competition on Thurs., Dec. 15, when they travel to Walla Walla University.  Northwest returns to action on Saturday when they host Pacific Lutheran.
