Second half spurt keeps Transy men unbeaten

RICHMOND, Ind. - Transylvania used a 19-4 scoring run to open the second half to overpower Earlham 81-57 Wednesday in Heartland Conference men's basketball action.

The Pioneers improve to 5-0, 2-0 HCAC, while the Quakers are 0-8, 0-2 in the conference. Earlham has lost its last 20 HCAC games over two seasons.

Transy led by only six, 34-28, at halftime, but rocketed to a big lead with its run to open the second period. The 19-4 surge made it 53-32 and the Pioneers continued to expand their advantage by scoring 25 of the first 32 points of the period.

Four Pioneers reached double digits, headed by junior Brandon Rash, who eight of nine from the field and three of three from the free throw line for 20 points. Ethan Spurlin added 19 points, Barrett Meyer 16, and senior Michael Stone 12.

Colton Bragg's 12 points led the Quakers, who shot 45 percent from the field in the first half, but just 35 percent in the second when Transy pulled away. The Pioneers continued their early season hot shooting, canning 51 percent of its attempts, 54 percent in the second half.

Transy was also hot from the three-point arc, hitting nine of 19 for 47 percent, including a four of six effort from Meyer. Stone hit two of four from long range. Transy also connected on 12 of 14 free throw attempts.

Transy had a 35-26 edge on the boards and turned the ball over only 12 times.

Transy returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Manchester for a 3 p.m. matchup with the Spartans.
