Brooklyn Falls at NYU, 78-70

New York, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team dropped a non-conference match to the Violets of New York University, 78-70, earlier tonight on the road at the Coles Sports Center. The loss snaps the Bulldogs four-game winning streak and drops BC to 5-2 overall on the season, while NYU remains unbeaten at 4-0 overall on the year.

The Bulldogs were led by senior guard Tyshawn Russell who notched a game-high 22 points on 7-for-20 shooting from the field, including going 1-for-5 from three and 7-for-13 from the charity stripe. Russell also recorded four rebounds, two assists and three steals. Classmate Amil John nearly registered a double-double with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while dishing out four assists and blocking two shots. Junior Steven Grant chipped in with 12 points coming off the bench.

For NYU, Andy Stein led the way with a team-high 14 points, while Carl Yaffe just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Ben Dorman (12 points) and Kyle Stockman (10 points) were also in double figure scoring for the Violets.

Brooklyn took early control of the game jumping out to a 9-0 run. NYU would score its first basket of the game at the 16:07 mark of the first half on a three-pointer from Max Wein to make it 9-3. After a layup from junior Kavon Baker gave the visiting Bulldogs another nine point advantage, 23-14, with 10:10 left before the halftime break, the Violets would make a run of their own, outscoring Brooklyn 16-6 over the next seven minutes to take their first lead of the game, 30-29, with 3:07 remaining in the opening half.

Following a free throw from junior Keiran Halton that tied the game at 30-30 at the 2:44 mark, NYU closed out the half on an 11-2 run to take a 41-32 advantage into the locker room.

The Violets bench played a major role in the first half, as the NYU reserves outscored the BC reserves 20-8. The Violets also scored 15 points off of turnovers, as well as seven second chance points.

Brooklyn would come out of the halftime break determined to get back into the game, as the Bulldogs began the second stanza on an 11-2 run of their own to tie the game at 43 all with 15:45 left in the game. BC would tie the game for the third time at 45-45 and eventually regain the lead on a three-pointer from John, which gave the Bulldogs a 58-57 advantage at the 7:16 mark.

The BC lead would not last long, however, as the Violets answered quickly with a 9-0 run to take a 66-58 lead with 5:12 left in the game. The Bulldogs would be unable to recover, as NYU would close out BC for the 78-70 victory.

For the game, the Bulldogs shot 38.9% (21-54) from the field and 31.3% (5-16) from three, while shooting 63.9% (23-36) from the free throw line.

NYU shot 46.8% (29-62) from the field and 31.8% (7-22) from three, while struggling from the line shooting just 48.1% (13-27). The Violets also held the rebounding edge, 47-37.

Brooklyn returns to action this Thursday, December 8th, as the Bulldogs will play host to Vaughn College at the West Quad Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
