Baldwin-Wallace Men's Basketball Upsets No.4-Ranked Marietta, 93-74, In OAC Opener

BEREA, OHIO  – Sophomore guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/ Holy Name) scored a season-high 17 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team upset No.4-ranked Marietta College, 93-74, today (Saturday, December 3, 2011) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center. The 93 points scored by the Yellow Jackets were the most of the season and the most since the 2009-10 season when B-W scored 96 on two occasions.

With the victory, the Yellow Jackets won their third straight game and improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the OAC. With the loss, the Pioneers drop their first game of the season and fall to 4-1 and 0-1 in the OAC.

In addition to Krakowiak, sophomore guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland) scored a season-best  16 points, junior forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) tallied 11 points, sophomore All-OAC forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick)contributed 10 points and grabbed a game-high five rebounds and sophomore post Aaron Selmek (Delaware/Columbus St. Francis DeSales) added 10 points.  The Pioneers were led by Kevin Knab with a game-high 27 points.

B-W netted the first points of the game when Payne scored a layup on a fast break at the 18:04 mark of the first half.  Marietta responded with a jumper from Jason Humphrey to tie the game, 2-2.

The two teams battled back and forth in the early stages of the contest until the Yellow Jackets went on a 13-3 run, capped off by a three-pointer by Fairhurst , to take a 22-9 advantage with 10:03 to go  in the first half. 

B-W extended its lead to as many as 17 points when senior All-OAC guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria) stroked a jumper at 6:42 to give B-W a 35-18 advantage. 

The Pioneers closed the half by cutting the Yellow Jacket lead down to 10 points, 43-33, after Knab scored on a layup as time expired in the first half. 

In the second half, Marietta cut the B-W lead to down to as few as five points, 44-39, on a three-pointer from Tyler Worstell at the 17:54 mark. Krakowiak would answer with a three of his own to extend the Yellow Jacket lead back eight, 47-39, at the 17:37 mark.

After the Krakowiak score, the Yellow Jackets would extend their lead to as many as 23 points to secure the 19 point win.

B-W is back in action on Wednesday, December 7 when the Yellow Jackets travel to Tiffin for an OAC Game against Heidelberg University in the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
