More news about: St. Thomas

Tommy Hannon converted a 3-point play with six seconds left to help the visiting Tommies (3-1) hold off host Concordia University, 94-88, in non-conference men's basketball play Saturday night at CU's Gangelhoff Center.

Concordia had a chance to tie in the final 30 seconds, down 91-88, but missed a layup with 13 seconds to go. UST was awarded the rebound out of bounds after a scrum.

On the throw in, Hannon caught a long pass down court and was fouled on the breakaway. He managed to get the shot to fall and convert the free throw to ice the victory.

St. Thomas, which shot 52% from the floor, sank nine 3-pointers and outscored the Bears 21-9 at the foul line. The Toms had 16 offensive rebounds and posted a 36-29 rebounding edge.

Hannon closed with 19 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Zach Riedeman scored a career-high 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting, and Will DeBerg sank five treys and scored 20 points. John Nance added 11 points, and Erik Tengwall scored eight.

St. Thomas fell behind 7-0 early. They used a 7-0 run to end the first half with a 56-48 lead. The Toms built a 16-point lead at 71-55, but the Bears pulled within 87-86 with 1:47 left on Peter Olefaso's 3-pointer.

UST led by just two points with 1:00 to go but DeBerg's trey with 43 seconds left put the Toms back up  by five.

It's the fifth consecutive season that the Tommies pulled out a close road win against a Division II opponent, including four tight wins over the Bears.

St. Thomas opens its conference season and plays its first home game Wednesday night against St. Olaf.
