SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior guard Taylor Barrise (Allendale, NJ) scored 21 points and sophomore guard Aaron Toomey (Greensboro, NC) added 20 as Amherst posted a 97-69 victory over Western New England in a non-league men's basketball game Tuesday evening (Nov. 22) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
Junior guard Willy Workman (Northampton, MA) was the third player in double figures as the fourth-ranked Lord Jeffs (d3hoops.com) remained undefeated at 3-0.
Barrise made eight-of-10 shots from the field, including five-of-seven three-pointers. Toomey contributed five steals and three assists. Workman sank seven-of-nine field goal attempts and had a team best six rebounds while also dishing out four assists and collecting four steals.
Amherst led 9-8 before using a 23-0 run to take a commanding 48-26 lead at halftime.
The Golden Bears trailed 63-35 at the 14:08 mark of the second half before going on a 17-4 run to get within 15 at 67-52 following a basket by sophomore forward Daniel Minto (West Hempstead, NY) with 8:20 left.
It was still a 15-point game at 69-54 before Amherst ran off 11 straight points capped by a basket by Workman to give the visitors an 80-54 advantage with 5:31 remaining in the game.
Senior guard Andre Shaw (New York, NY) led Western New England with a game-high 23 points (including 15-of-16 free throws).
Minto finished with a career high 12 points (five-of-seven from the field) coming off the bench while sophomore forward Kevin Wilkes (Troy, NY) chipped-in with 10 points. Sophomore forward Dennis Rinaldi (Harrison, NY) pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Amherst shot 55.4% from the floor and held a 38-28 edge in rebounding. Western New England made 40.4% of its field-goal attempts.
The Golden Bears head into the Thanksgiving holiday break with a 2-2 record.
