Western New England falls to Trinity 73-63 in Golden Bears Hoop Classic championship

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore forward Eric Dean (Gilford, NH) led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points to lead the Trinity men's basketball team to a 73-63 victory over host Western New England in the championship game of the Golden Bears Hoop Classic Saturday afternoon (Nov. 19).

Dean, who was named the Tournament MVP, also contributed eight rebounds and three assists as the Bantams improved to 2-0.

Freshman guard Varum Ram (Clarkville, MD) and freshman forward Jon Seltzer (Penn Valley, PA) each added 12 points while freshman guard Carter Trent (Little Rock, AR) contributed 11 points coming off the bench.

Senior center Chris Applegate (High Point, NC) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Trinity led 42-29 lead at halftime and broke away in the second half taking a 28-point advantage (68-40) with 7:17 remaining before the Golden Bears made the score respectable down the stretch.

Senior guard Andre Shaw (New York, NY) continued his fine play with 21 points (including a perfect11-for-11 from the foul line). Sophomore guard Ryan Mickiewicz (East Longmeadow, MA) chipped-in with 10 points.

Shaw and junior guard Damon Alston (New Britain, CT) (who had 18 points in the two games) were selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Western New England is now 2-1.

Senior forward Antonio Davis (Albany, NY) compiled a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds as the Cadets evened their record at 1-1. Davis was voted to the All-Tournament Team.

Junior guards Ryan Williams (Dallas, TX) and Josh Cabrera (Providence, RI) added 21 and 13  points, respectively as Norwich battled back from a 42-36 halftime deficit.

Senior forward Dalton Austin-Michaud (Valatie, NY) led three Gators in double figures with 18 points and nine rebounds in earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Freshman forward Michael Gallagher (Schenectady, NY) had a solid outing with 17 points and eight rebounds. Junior forward Matt Farbotko (Rouses Point, NY) netted 10 points. Junior guard Jeff Stopera (Scotia, NY) dished out 11 assists.

Sage drops to 1-2.
