Lowder Lifts Guilford Past Johnson & Wales (NC), 86-71

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Gabriel Lowder scored a game- and career-high 21 points in Guilford College's 86-71 victory over Johnson & Wales (N.C.) University in Friday's opening round of the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational in the Quakers' Ragan Brown Field House.

The win sends the Quakers (3-0) into Saturday's 3:00 championship game against Greensboro College, a 68-58 winner over Bridgewater College in Friday's second game. The Quakers edged the Pride (2-1) Wednesday, 60-59, in Greensboro's Hanes Gymnasium.

Lowder scored 12 points in the second half, including seven during a 15-0 Guilford spurt late in the game. Michael Daniel's steal and layup at the 6:25 mark ended a 12-5 Wildcats' (0-7) run and pulled the visitors to within 69-66. Guilford scored on its next seven possessions and held Johnson & Wales scoreless until two Abdul-Kareem Wilson (16 points) free throws with 2:27 left made it an 84-67 game.

Guilford's Brad Monroe corralled a game and career-best 17 rebounds, including 12 off the offensive glass. His effort underneath resulted in the Quakers' commanding 52-23 rebounding edge and 25 second-chance points.

Carson Sullivan chipped in 15 points and a eight rebounds for the Quakers, both career highs. Teammate Travis Tracy netted a personal-best 14 points off the bench and Josh Pittman finished with 13. He drained three key three-pointers midway through the second half and did not turn the ball over in 30 minutes.

Shaquille White scored a team-high 17 points for Johnson & Wales, 13 in the second half. DeShaun Alston tallied all 16 of his points in the first half, which featured seven ties and seven lead changes. The Wildcats shot 50 percent from the floor in the opening period, but were 11-of-28 (39.3%) in the second half, including three-of-13 from three-point range.

Luqman Tijani sparked Greensboro's comeback in Friday's nightcap by scoring 11 of his game-high 17 points in the second half. Despite 18 turnovers, Bridgewater led for most of the first half, and held a 53-52 lead with 5:53 left in regulation after a David Larson basket. Tijani scored the game's next six points during a decisive 10-0 Greensboro run that gave the Pride a 62-53 lead with 3:33 remaining.

Greensboro scored 30 points off of 35 Bridgewater turnovers and had 16 steals. Chakiris Moss had a game-high four thefts along with 10 points. Brock Moorman and Damian Dixon both scored eight points for the Pride.

Cody Griffith scored a team-high 15 points and had four assists for the Eagles (1-1). Ed Reddick scored 10 points off the bench.

Bridgewater and Johnson & Wales meet at 1:00 p.m. in Saturday's consolation game.
