The University of Scranton men's basketball team used a blistering offensive display in the second half to pull away for a 92-62 victory over SUNY-Maritime on Friday evening in the opening round of the Radisson Invitational at the John Long Center.
The Royals placed five players in double figures in scoring, led by 18 from junior guard Travis Farrell (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy). Senior guard Luke Hawk (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) scored 15, junior guard Tim Lavelle (Clarks Green, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) had 14, freshman guard Ross Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy-N.J.) had 13 and senior guard Dan Hilferty (Ardmore, Pa./Episcopal Academy) added 12 points and six assists.
The Royals led at halftime, 37-29, as Lavelle connected on all four of his attempts from 3-point range and Farrell nailed three of four. Scranton then came out of the locker room and scored 55 points after the break by shooting 60.6 percent (20 of 33) to turn the game into a rout. The Royals shot 53.1 percent (34-for-64) for the game, including 12-for-21 from 3-point range.
Scranton held a 43-26 rebounding advantage and a 41-27 advantage in bench scoring.
Senior guard Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) led Maritime (0-2) with a game-high 19 points. Senior forward Sam Porte (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) had 16 and freshman guard T-Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Academy) added 13 for the Privateers, who shot 43.6 percent (24-for-55) from the field.
The game was the season opener for Scranton, which traveled to Philadelphia on Monday, November 14 for an exhibition against Division I St. Joseph's. The Royals dropped that contest, 90-52.
Scranton advances to the championship game on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Long Center against New Paltz, an 85-79 winner over Centenary in the other opening round game Friday night. Maritime and Centenary will meet Saturday at 2 p.m. in the consolation game.
