FARMINGTON -- Saint Joseph's College of Maine used a late run to pull away from University of Maine at Farmington 57-47 in non-conference men's basketball action this evening at Dearborn Gymnasium.

The game was the season opener for both teams. The Beavers (0-1) are head to the Hampton Inn Classic at UMass-Dartmouth to face Bowdoin College Friday at 5:30 p.m., while the Monks (1-0) are slated to visit Bowdoin on Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m.

Zach O'Brien (Schenectady, N.Y.) led the Monks with 19 points and capped off St. Joe's 9-0 run with a layup with 2:10 to play to help the visitors to a 53-45 advantage en route to the victory. Chris Petzy (Kensington, N.H.) followed O'Brien with 13 points. O'Brien and Petzy each grabbed seven rebounds.

Pet Sumner (Cramerton, N.C.) paced UMF with 14 points with Joe McCloskey (Howland, Maine) supplying nine points and seven boards. The Beavers struggled from beyond the arc, shooting 25 percent (7-28).

After the two teams see-sawed through the opening seven minutes with a Ben Johnson (Manchester, Maine) layup giving the hosts a 13-12 edge, St. Joe's scored the game's next nine points with a Petzy three giving the Monks a 21-13 lead with 10:23 left in the half.

The Beavers held the Monks scoreless for nearly 10 minutes to close out the opening frame, but could not muster much offense either as the visitors led 24-18 at the break.

St. Joe's bolstered its lead to 35-25 on an O'Brien trey with 14 minutes to go in the contest. UMF responded with 10 consecutive points over the next 1:30 to knot the contest at 35. Yusuf Iman (Auburn, Maine) scored seven points during that span.

Sumner rolled around a 3-pointer with 6:56 to play to give the Beavers a 45-44 advantage, but Monks reeled off the next 10 points -- headlined by a Nich Jobin (Westbrook, Maine) tip-in and dunk -- to take a 53-45 command with 2:10 left. The Monks finished the contest out at the charity stripe (4-4) to close out the 57-47 win.
