PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The University of Scranton men's basketball team did not have an answer for St. Joseph's University's size, strength, and athleticism in an exhibition game Monday evening at Hagen Arena.

Playing an NCAA Division I opponent for the first time since 2001, the Royals fell behind early and never recovered in dropping an 90-52 decision.  Despite the loss, Scranton head coach Carl Danzig was upbeat after the game.

"It was a positive experience for our group," Danzig said. "St. Joe's had a great atmosphere, which was great for our guys to be exposed to. I was pleased with how we performed. What the people at home couldn't see was that it's not like they stopped us from getting our shots. We just didn't make them. If we made a few shots, I think we could've made it interesting."

The Hawks, coming off a 72-61 victory in their official season-opener Friday night at Western Kentucky, were relentless from the get-go.  They shot nearly 67 percent from the field in the first half to build up a commanding 46-22 halftime lead.  And though it may be hard to believe, they shot even better in the final 20 minutes of play, connecting on 18 of 25 attempts from the field in the second half (72.0 percent) to finish nearly 70 percent for the game.

Sophomore forward Ronald Roberts (Bayonne, NJ/Saint Peter's Preparatory) led five St. Joseph's players in double figures with 14 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the field, junior guard Carl Jones (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) contributed 13 points, sophomore forward C.J. Aiken (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore forward Halil Kanacevic (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) and freshman forward Papa Ndao (Dakar, Senegal/Montverde Academy-Fla.) combined for 20 points and 18 rebounds.

Scranton, which shot only 33.3 percent from the field and just 41.7 percent from the free throw line, was led by senior forward Matt Swaback (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) with 16 points and freshman guard Ross Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy-NJ) finished with nine points, four rebounds and three assists in 30 minutes of action.

The outcome of tonight's exhibition will not count towards either team's win-loss record.

The Royals will officially open their 2011-2012 season this Friday, November 18, against Maritime College in the semifinals of the 10th annual Radisson Invitational beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Long Center.  The first game will feature Centenary College and New Paltz at 5:30 p.m.

News & Notes:  Tonight was the first meeting between St. Joseph's and Scranton since November 29, 1981...Royals were 7 of 24 (29.2 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc…Royals were out-rebounded 41-27…
