NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Brandeis men's basketball team got off to a hot start from beyond the arc, but couldn't sustain their momentum as the Judges dropped a 70-54 decision at NYU in the regular-season finale for both teams. Brandeis closes the regular season at 16-9, 6-8 in the University Athletic Association, while NYU is 15-10, 4-10.

Brandeis hit on six of their first eight 3-point shots in the game to keep pace with NYU, who also started off hot. The game was close over the first 10 minutes, with the Judges within one midway through the first after a Derek Retos (No. Attleboro, Mass./Brimmer and May School) trifecta made the score 21-20, NYU. The bomb answered three free throws from Violet Kyle Stockmal (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) that had put the hosts up by four.

Unfortunately for the Judges, the rims seemed to get smaller after Retos's bomb. After missing just twice from downtown in the first quarter of the game, Brandeis hit just one of six the rest of the way in the first and went 0-for-9 from beyond the arc in the second half as they tried to get back in the game. NYU closed the first half on an 18-9 run over the final 10 minutes, taking a 39-29 lead into the locker room thanks to 57.1% shooting (16-28).

While that score was similar to the 38-28 edge the Violets owned in the previous meeting between the two teams in January, this time the hosts were able to keep the pressure on, leading by as many as 23 in the second half before Brandeis trimmed the deficit down late for the 16-point final margin.

The story of the game for NYU was senior D.J. Glavan, who had 26 points and eight rebounds, both game highs, while also dishing four assists, in his final regular-season game. He hit 10-of-17 from the field, 2-of-6 from deep and 4-of-6 from the line. He tallied 12 in the first half and 14 in the second. Three other starters reached double figures for the hosts, as Richie Polan had 12 points - and tied with Glavan with eight boards - Stockmal had 11 and Andy Stein had 10. The Violets connected on 52.9% from the floor (27-51) while holding Brandeis to 34.6% (18-52).

Brandeis was paced by rookie Ben Bartoldus (Hillsborough, N.H./Proctor Acad.), who had 12 points overall, nine coming in the second half. Classmate Youri Dascy (Fall River, Mass./St. Andrews (R.I.) School) added 11, seven after the break. Senior Christian Yemga (Yaounde, Cameroon/Proctor Acad.) and rookie Ruben Kanya (Ottawa, Ont./Bridgton (Maine) Acad.) led the Judges with six rebounds each, while Yemga and sophomore Jay Freeman (Dorchester, Mass./St. Mark's School) each had two assists.

The Judges will miss the NCAA tournament for the first time in five seasons, but will look for word of an ECAC tournament berth on Monday afternoon.
