Pointers Win Third Consecutive WIAC Tournament Title

STEVENS POINT- The UW-Stevens Point Men's Basketball Team tied the WIAC Tournament record for made three pointers en route to their third consecutive WIAC Tournament Championship on Saturday at Bennett Court over UW-River Falls, 79-56.

The Pointers (24-3) made 15 of the 26 threes they attempted on Saturday as they shot an impressive 57.7 percent from deep.

Leading the way from three point range was Jerrel Harris and Vinny Ritchay who each made four shots from behind the arc.  Louis Hurd and Jordan Giordana each made three from long distance.

After building a 15-10 lead early in the game, the Pointers went on a 15-0 run to take a 30-10 lead with 8:18 remaining in the opening half.

Harris made two threes during the run, while Ritchay added one as the Pointers took control of the game.

The Pointers took a 39-20 lead into the half, making 11 threes in the opening 20 minutes and shooting 51.6 percent of the floor.

Harris led the way for the Pointers scoring 18 points.  Hurd finished with a double-double has he had 17 points and 11 rebounds.  Scott Hoelzel led the team with a game high 12 rebounds.

Giordana and Ritchay each finished with double digits as they had 13 and 12 points, respectively.  Tyler Tillema had a game high five assists for the Pointers as they assisted 21 of their 27 made field goals.

The Pointers bench outscored the Falcons 35-21, while they also won the battle of the boards 39-29.

The 20 plus point win was the Pointers 12th win by at least 20 at home this season as they improved to 14-0 at Bennett Court.

Shane Manor led the way for the Falcons (20-7) as he had 15 points and seven rebounds.  The Falcons will now have to wait until Selection Monday to see if they will be included in the 61 team NCAA Tournament field.

With the win the Pointers secured the WIAC automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament as they will find out where they will play on Monday.
