Mavs Fall in AMCC Semifinals

More news about: Medaille

(Pittsburgh, PA) – There will be no "three-peat" for the Medaille College men's basketball team as they were upended (58-51) by #2 seeded Penn State-Behrend in the AMCC Semifinals on the campus of La Roche College.  The Mavs had won the previous two AMCC Regular Season and Tournament titles before losing this afternoon to the rival Lions.

The story of the game was the Mavs inability to knock down shots as they connected on just (34.8%) of their attempts from the field and just (21.4%) from behind the arc.  The Lions shot well, finishing the day with a (51.0%) field goal percentage.

Senior forward Ron Malicki (Machias, NY/Pioneer) led all scorers with (18) points, he was a perfect (10 for 10) from the charity stripe on the day.  He also grabbed four boards and dished out three assists.

Fellow senior Joe Mogavero (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) was the only other Maverick in double figures as he finished the game with (12) points on (3 of 5) shooting while pulling down (6) boards.  Ricky Reed (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) grabbed a game high (7) caroms and swiped a game best (3) steals.

The game had a very slow start with both teams focusing on defense and very few shots were converted early.  The Lions took a (25-20) lead into the break.  The second half would see some more offensive flow for each team with buckets coming a bit more frequently.  The Mavs were unable to fully answer any of the Behrend runs, despite getting within two points on several occasions.

The loss drops Medaille to (20-7) on the year and they will most likely end up in the ECAC Upstate Tournament which will be determined on Monday afternoon (2/28).  The Mavs have put together three straight (20) win seasons
