CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College senior forwards Edgar Martinez (Springfield, Mass.) and Juan Alverio (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) each poured in a team-high 15 points to help pace the Blazers to an 82-65 victory over Wheelock College in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference men's basketball game at Picknelly Arena.

With the win, Elms concludes its regular season 18-7 overall, 11-3 in NECC action, while Wheelock moves to 10-15 on the season, 6-8 in league play.

Leading 36-32 at intermission, Elms scored 13 of the first 20 points of the second half to take a 10-point 49-39 lead over the first 4:45 of the second half.

A free throw by Wheelock's Max Kaim (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) at the 10:07 mark set the score at 56-46, before a bucket on a rebound by Victor Kashouh (Providence, R.I.) and a layup by Patsy DiNuzzo (Beaver, Pa.) pulled the Wildcats to within six at 56-50.

Blazers' sophomore center Carson Miller (New Oxford, Pa.) delivered a foul shot and a jumper, and sophomore guard Brittain Purcelle (Tarrytown, N.Y.) swished a pair from the stripe to extend Elms' advantage back to 11 with 7:01 to play in the game.

A mid-range jumper by Bashir Hudson (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) narrowed Wheelock's deficit to seven (65-58) with 4:56 on the clock, before Elms' junior guard Daniel Gonzalez (East Windsor, Mass.) and senior guard Cecil Avant (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) buried treys to open up a 13-point lead with 4:18 remaining in the contest.

A basket in the paint by Martinez at the 2:23 mark set the score at 76-60 and the Blazers scored six of the final 11 points to pull away to an 82-65 win.

Elms shot 50-percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and finished the game shooting 46.2 percent as Gonzalez and Miller joined Martinez and Alverio in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively.

Alverio added a game-high 14 rebounds, while Cecil Avant dished out a game-best six assists.

Gonzalez connected on 4 of 7 from beyond the arc, while sophomore forward Jamal Hulum (Reston, Va.) added three blocks in the win.

Wheelock's Eric Rice (Woburn, Mass.) led all scorers with 18 points including a pair of three-pointers, while Kyle Pierce (Burlington, Mass.) netted 11 points.

Hudson added eight points a team-best 11 rebound off the bench, while Pierce recorded five assists in the loss.

Elms returns to action in the NECC Championship tournament.
