Swarthmore Splits Series With 73-59 Win Over Devils

(Swarthmore, Pa.) – The Dickinson College men's basketball team suffered a 73-59 loss on the road at Swarthmore on Saturday. The Garnet turned the tables on the Red Devils, avenging a loss in Carlisle by almost an identical score with the Devils winning that game, 74-61 back in November.

 

The Red Devils led early but could not stretch the lead to more than four points. The Garnet broke a 15-all tie with a 10-3 run to lead 25-18 with 6:48 remaining in the half. The Red Devils rallied twice, pulling within a point at the 2:20 mark, trailing 31-30. Swarthmore held a 38-32 advantage at the break.

 

Dickinson came out strong in the second half, chipping away at the lead to pull in front, 49-48, on a Matt Dolan (Chalfont, Pa./St. Joe's Prep) three-pointer with 10:48 remaining in the game. The Garnet answered on the other end and would hold the lead for the remainder of the contest.

 

The Devils trailed just 54-51 at the 7:28 mark before an 8-0 run put Swarthmore in front, 62-51, with 4:30 left to play in the game. The Garnet hit 9-of-12 free throws in the final 1:58 to help secure the win.

 

Four Garnet players reached double-figures, led by Will Gates with a game-high 19 points, hitting 8-of-12 free throws on the day. Swarthmore improves to 5-10 overall and 2-6 in the Centennial Conference.

 

Dolan led the Red Devils with 16 points, sinking 7-of-8 free throw attempts. First-year Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) tallied 14 points and six rebounds, hitting 5-of-7 field-goals. Sophomore Chris Barsanti (Hummelstown, Pa./Tilton School) added nine points and four rebounds, going 3-for-3 from the line. Senior Pat Kearns (Hartford, Conn./East Catholic) chipped in with four points, five rebounds, a pair of assists and two steals.

 

The Red Devils slip to 7-8 overall and 5-3 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to host 18th-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday night at 8:00 pm.
