Blue Jays Slip Past Devils 61-60

(Baltimore, Md.) – The Dickinson College men's basketball team turned in a strong performance but suffered a tough loss at Johns Hopkins, falling 61-60 in the final seconds on Saturday.

 

The teams played even throughout the first half, posting five ties in opening eight minutes to stand locked at 10-10 with 11:55 to play in the half. The Devils opened a six point lead but the Blue Jays answered back immediately to knot the game again, 18-18, at the 7:05 mark.

 

Hopkins pulled in front 27-22 with 2:39 remaining in the half and held a 28-26 advantage at the break. The teams traded leads early in the second half but neither team could gain more than a three-point advantage, playing to a 49-49 tie with 7:57 remaining in regulation.

 

The Red Devils went on a 9-2 run to pull in front, 58-51, enjoying some much needed breathing room. The relief was short-lived as Hopkins battled back again with Adam Spengler tying the game at 60 with a layup at the 1:26 mark. He was fouled on the play and converted the free throw to put Hopkins up, 61-60.

 

The Devils turned the ball over on a steal by Daniel Corbett. The Blue Jays missed on the other end with first-year Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) pulling down the rebound with 22 seconds to play. Dickinson had a final shot attempt blocked as the Blue Jays held on for the win.

 

Senior Matt Dolan (Chalfont, Pa./St. Joe's Prep) led the Devils with a game-high 24 points, hitting 10-of-14 shots from the field and controlling five rebounds. Honig tallied nine points and dished out four assists while Chris Barsanti (Hummelstown, Pa./Tilton School) added eight points in 4-of-5 shooting from the floor.

 

John Alberici led the Blue Jays with 14 points and four blocked shots, including one on the Devils' final attempt. Mike Henrici added 11 points for Hopkins (2-4, 1-2 CC).

 

The Red Devils slip to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Muhlenberg on Wednesday night at 8:00 pm.
