Auggies top Gusties, remain alive in MIAC playoff push

MINNEAPOLIS -- Cory Polta (JR, Spring Lake Park, Minn.) led the Augsburg College men's basketball team with a game-high 19 points in a 68-61 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday at Si Melby Hall, as the Auggies continue their push for the sixth and final Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff position.

Augsburg (15-10 overall, 10-10 MIAC) was led by its big-man duo of Polta and Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (JR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS). In addition to his 19 points, Polta added a team-high nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Grzesiak-Grimm finished with 12 points on a perfect 3-for-3 night from the field and a 6-for-10 performance at the free-throw line, while adding six rebounds.

Gustavus (12-12 overall, 10-9 MIAC) finished with three players in double figures, led offensively by Dan Schmidtknecht with 16 points, and led on the boards by Paul Blacklock, who finished with a game-high 10 rebounds.

After trailing 31-23 at the half, Augsburg put together a thrilling second half. The Auggies' Tyler Schmidt (SO, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) hit a three-pointer at the 13:13 mark to tie things up at 42-42 and Augsburg went ahead for the first time in the half on the next possession with a layup by Anthony Humphrey (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS).

The Auggies were able to show poise down the stretch, converting on 7-of-9 from the charity stripe in the final three minutes and highlighting a dunk by Grezesiak-Grimm and a layup by Josh Pronschinske (SR, Fountain City, Wis./Cochrane-Fountain City HS) to seal the win in the final 20 seconds.

All three Augsburg seniors made an impact in their final home game of their careers. Matthew Quammen (SR, Victoria, Minn./Holy Family HS) finished with seven points and six assists, while Tony Doran (SR, Richfield, Minn./Trinity-River Ridge HS), recording his first collegiate start, finished with one rebound and one assist. Pronschinske finished with two points.

For the game, Augsburg shot 47.1 percent (24-of-51) from the field, while Gustavus connected on 44.1 percent (26-of-59) of its shots. The Gusties claimed a narrow 34-31 advantage on the boards but the Auggies outscored Gustavus 37-28 in points in the paint and 21-7 in bench points.

Augsburg is idle on Saturday (2/19)and will await the results of the St. John's vs. St. Thomas and Concordia vs. Hamline games to determine its playoff future.
