Devils Battle, Fall in Pizza Hut Tip-Off Final

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College men's basketball team suffered a tough loss in the championship game of the Pizza Hut Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Devils battled throughout the game but in the end visiting Nazareth College came out on top, 70-66.

 

The Golden Flyers opened a 37-33 lead at halftime and held the lead for the majority of the second half, but could not stretch the lead to more than nine. The Devils went on a 12-3 run to erase a nine point lead, tying the game, 57-57, with 7:26 to play.

 

Nazareth rebuilt the lead to nine before the Devils rallied again to pull within a basket with just 59 seconds remaining in regulation. A pair of late free throws by tournament MVP Dan Waldbillig secured the win for the Flyers.

 

Senior Matt Dolan (Chalfont, Pa./St. Joe's Regional) earned All-Tournament honors, scoring a team-high 18 points behind 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc and a 5-for-8 performance from the line. Dolan also tallied nine rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Classmate Pat Kearns (Harford, Conn./East Catholic) also made the All-Tournament team. He came off the bench to score 16 points, hitting 6-of-7 free throws on the night.

 

First-year Brian Gerney (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) turned in another strong performance, scoring 10 points.

 

Waldbillig led all scorers with 19 points, hitting 11-of-13 from the charity stripe. Tyshun Stephens earned All-Tourney honors with 17 points, six assists and two steals.

 

The Red Devils slip to 1-2 overall. They open Centennial Conference play on Tuesday night, hosting Swarthmore College at 8:00 pm.
