Brooklyn Downs CSI in CUNYAC Finale, 67-62

Staten Island, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team defeated the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island in the 2010-2011 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) regular season finale for both teams, by a score of 67-62 earlier today at the CSI Sports & Recreation Center.

With the win, BC improves to 13-11 overall on the season and finish conference play with a 9-4 record. More importantly, the win also locks up a top-4 seed for two-time defending CUNYAC champion Bulldogs and the right to host a home game in the CUNYAC Quarterfinals scheduled to be held on Sunday, February 20th. Opponent will be determined at a later date. With the loss, CSI falls to 15-8 overall and 10-3 in league play. Despite the loss, the Dolphins will enter the 2011 CUNYAC Tournament as the number one overall seed.

After a tight first half, the Bulldogs began to pull away, building their advantage to as many as 15, 35-20, with 2:55 left before the break. Tied for the third time in the game at 18 apiece at the 9:08 mark, the Bulldogs would go on a 17-2 run to take the 35-20 lead. Senior Darnell Cudjoe helped spark the run scoring 10 of the 17 points. CSI would close out the half on an 8-0 run, as Brooklyn headed into the halftime break up 35-28.

The Dolphins momentum would carry over into the second half, as CSI scored the first 11 points of the second stanza to take a 39-35 lead. The host Dolphins would lead for much of the second half until Brooklyn came back to regain the lead for good, utilizing a 10-0 run. Down by five, 57-52, with 3:48 remaining in the game, the Bulldogs scored 10 straight points to go up by five, 62-57, with just 30 ticks left in the game. Junior Tyshawn Russell led the run scoring five of the 10 points. Brooklyn would hit their free throws down the stretch to come out on top, 67-62.

For the game, BC shot 45.3% (24-for-53) from the field, while CSI shot 40.3% (25-for-62) from the field. Free throws were key to the Brooklyn victory as the Bulldogs went to the charity stripe 24 times, connecting on 16, while the Dolphins went to the line 13 times, converting on seven. CSI controlled the glass holding the rebounding edge 40-37; however the Bulldogs forced the Dolphins into 17 turnovers for the game, with 11 resulting from a steal.

Junior Amil John led the way for Brooklyn with a team-high 20 points, while Cudjoe finished the night with a double-double scoring 16 points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds. Russell chipped in with 11 points, while senior Ahmad Hemingway netted 10 points.

Bloochy Magliore led all scorers for CSI dropping a game-high 21 points, coming off the bench, connecting on 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. Jordan Young had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Thomas Tibbs chipped in with 12 points.

Brooklyn will close out its 2010-2011 regular season on Wednesday, February 16th, when the Bulldogs will be on the road to take on Yeshiva University. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 pm.
