The Oswego State men's basketball team overcame foul trouble to extend its winning streak to 11 games as it defeated Plattsburgh, 79-76, in a battle of the top two squads in the conference at Memorial Hall on Friday night. Chad Burridge compiled a game-high 18 points to help the Lakers gain a three-game lead in the win column of the SUNYAC standings with a record of 13-1 to set a program record for conference wins in a season and move to 18-3 overall. The Cardinals fell to 14-7 overall and 10-4 in the league.
Three Lakers joined Burridge in double-digits as Hayden Ward poured in 17 points and went a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe, and Conor Monaghan and Ryan Sheridan contributed 11 points each.
After a back-and-forth battle for most of the first half, Oswego State embarked on a 12-1 run that was fueled by a pair of Monaghan jump shots, a Chris Gilkes layup, and two three-pointers by Sean Michele to go ahead 37-27 with one minute left in the stanza. Carl Munnerlyn cut the Plattsburgh deficit to six points before the end of the frame with a rare four-point play after being fouled on a trey.
The Cardinals pulled to within three points at 56-53 and 12:09 remaining in the game following a layup by Steve Thomas. The Lakers went on to out-score Plattsburgh 15-5 over the next seven minutes to hold their largest lead of the game at 71-58. However, the Cardinals had one final rally remaining as Steve Thomas drained a three-pointer with 14 seconds remaining to pull Plattsburgh to within one point at 77-76.
Oswego State called timeout after the basket to keep the ball from the Cardinals. Burridge was fouled with four seconds on the clock, and proceeded to sink both free throws to put the Lakers ahead 79-76. Plattsburgh had one last chance to tie the game, but turned the ball over, giving Oswego State the victory.
Free-throw shooting played a key role in the final outcome as the Lakers went 15-for-21 (71.4 percent) from the line compared to the Cardinals converting 18-of-33 attempts at 54.5 percent shooting due in part to 25 Oswego State 25 fouls and 12 fouls for Plattsburgh.
Shavar Fields paced the Cardinals with 16 points off the bench as one of five Plattsburgh players to reach double-digits.
Oswego State continues its North Country trip on Saturday afternoon when it faces Potsdam at 4 p.m.
