Second Half Offense Stymied by Stags

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Leading at the break on the road Wednesday night, the Kingsmen basketball team managed only 12 second half points in dropping a 57-47 conference contest to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. CMS erased a lengthy deficit after a 22-2 second half scoring run put the game out of reach.

Cal Lutheran held a lead spanning 22 minutes of game time, but Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Beau Heidrich knocked down a three pointer taking the lead for good with 11:26 remaining in regulation.

Despite not grabbing an offensive rebound the entire first half, CLU had only nine opportunities to do so making 14-of-23 shots from the field over the first 20 minutes. Xavier Walton matched his season-high of seven points within the opening nine minutes of the game including a pair of three pointers.

Greg Grimm scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in the first period and was the main culprit as the visiting side led by as many as 11 in the opening frame. CMS trimmed the deficit to three before Grimm and Collin Knudsen scored the final four points pushing the margin back to seven at intermission.

In the second half the Kingsmen managed only 15 shot attempts after the Stags defense forced 12 CLU turnovers and gave up just two offensive rebounds. Cal Lutheran was held to only six second half points before Grimm knocked down a pair of final minute three pointers ending a 22-2 scoring run by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Three of CMS' five starters put up double figures with Kevin Sullivan's 14 leading the way. Joseph Anderson grabbed a team-high eight rebounds (six offensive) to go along with eight points.

The Stags (12-8, 8-2 SCIAC) are tied atop the conference standings with the next opponent for the Kingsmen.

Cal Lutheran (10-11, 4-6 SCIAC) will host Redlands (11-10, 8-2 SCIAC) on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m.
