Baldwin-Wallace College Men's Basketball Team Falls To Cross-Town Rival John Carroll, 78-62

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OHIO – The trio of senior forward Maurice Haynes and junior guards Joey Meyer and Corey Shontz combined to score 56 points at the John Carroll University men's basketball team defeated Baldwin-Wallace College, 78-62, today (Wednesday, February 9, 2011) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights.

With its win, JCU improves to 16-6 overall and 11-4 in the OAC and beat B-W for the sixth straight time. Shontz led the Blue Streaks with 21 points, Haynes had 20 and Meyer 15. In addition, junior guard Michael Hartnett had 10 points for JCU. The Yellow Jackets, now 7-15 overall and 3-12 in the OAC, it was their eighth straight loss.  B-W was led by sophomore forward Sean Rothermel (Delaware/ Hayes) with 14 points and freshman forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) had 13 points.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets scored the first two points of the game when Payne grabbed an offensive rebound and scored. The Blue Streaks came right back to score the next 13 points to grab a 13-2 lead at the 14:13 mark when Meyer made a layup. B-W senior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) ended the drought when he made a three-pointer to make the score 13-5 at the 13:38 mark.

JCU scored the next seven points to build a 20-5 lead at the 11:37 mark when junior guard Michael Hartnett scored, was fouled and made his free throw for a traditional three-point play. Rothermel ended that drough by canning two foul shots at the 11:10 mark to make the score 20-7. Again, JCU scored the next five points to build its lead to 18 points at 25-7 at the 9:45 mark when Meyer canned a trey. Rothermel again ended the drought when he made a layup at 9:06 to make the score 25-9.

JCU again scored five straight points to increase its lead to 30-9 at the 8:05 mark when senior forward Maurice Haynes made a jump shot.  B-W scored the next four points to close to 30-13 when sophomore forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) made a layup at 6:17.  The Blue Streaks then outscored the Yellow Jackets 15-11 to take a commanding 45-24 lead at the intermission.

In the second half, the Blue Streaks tied their largest lead at 23 points at 47-24 when Shontz made a layup at 18:54.  B-W scored the next six points to close to 47-30 with 17:01 left when sophomore guard Ben Umbel (Poland/ Seminary) made a steals and scored on a layup. Undaunted, JCU went on a 11-4 run to build its largest lead at 24 points at 58-34 when Shontz canned a triple at 12:50. B-W then went on a 5-0 run of its own to close to 19 points at 58-39 when freshman guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland/ Senior) made a three-pointer at 11:43.

After another JCU three-pointer made the score 61-39, B-W went on an 8-2 run to cose to 63-47 with 8:42 left when Payne made a layup.  B-W had another 5-2 run to get as close as 65-52 with 5:49 left when Payne made one of two foul shots, but that was as close as the Yellow Jackets would get.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, February 12 when they travel to Columbus and play in the second game of a women's and men's doubleheader at Capital University in the Capital Center at 4:00 p.m.  The B-W and Capital women tipoff at 2:00 p.m. In addition, fans can listen to all of the action on either campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, or via the WBWC Internet web site at www.wbwc.com.

On Saturday, Feb. 19, the B-W women and men host Ohio Northern University in a doubleheader in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center. That twinbill will be taped and televised by SportsTime Ohio. The women tipoff at 2:00 p.m. and the men at 4:00 p.m.  

In addition on Feb. 19 , the men's game is the Third Annual Take a Kid to the Game Day. All children from first through eighth grades will be admitted free of charge when accompanied by a parent or adult. Prior to the game there will face-painting with the B-W cheerleaders as well as games for the kids to play. Following the B-W versus ONU men's game, there will be an autograph session with Yellow Jacket players and coaches.
