WINCHESTER, Va.  – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team completed its non-conference slate Tuesday night with a 67-62 loss to NAIA Southern Virginia.

Shenandoah (3-17) scored the first 10 points of the game only to watch as Southern Virginia (16-7) raced back into the contest with a 12-0 run of its own.

Brandon Bryan finally snapped this five-minute, 23-second scoreless streak with a fast break layup at 9:36, but the Hornets were able to lead for only 55 seconds the rest of the way.

Corey Levenberry gave the hosts that last lead, 14-13, on a fast break bucket with 8:03 left. Richard Mumford tied it by making one of two from the line 55 seconds later, and SVU never trailed again.

Southern Virginia jumped out to its largest lead, 12 points, at the 15:03 mark of the second before Shenandoah began to get hot.

Fueled by three Brandon Bryan 3-pointers, SU went on a 14-2 run over the next 3:25 to tie it at 45-45 following another Levenberry layup.

Unfortunately for the Shingleton Gymnasium faithful, the Knights answered with six of the game's next eight points to re-assert the advantage.

This lead again ballooned to double-digits as Casey Nye capped off a 13-3 SVU run at 6:32 by making hitting one of two from the line.

Shenandoah was able to cut the deficit to three points on four different occasions in the final three minutes, the last with 19 seconds left, but could get no closer.

Bryan led the Hornets with 16 points with Mitch Dudley adding 15 and Levenberry 12.

Spencer Briggs paced the victors with 23.

Southern Virginia held a 34-32 advantage on the glass.

The Hornets finish the road portion of their 2010-11 season this weekend with games at Ferrum on Saturday and Averett Sunday. Game time is 4 p.m. both days.
