Late Burridge Jumper Lifts Oswego State Over SUNY Cobleskill 63-62

More news about: Oswego State

Chad Burridge drained a jump shot with 11 seconds remaining to help the Oswego State men's basketball team get past upset-minded SUNY Cobleskill, 63-62, on Monday night in Cobleskill.  In a tight contest that saw 14 lead changes and seven ties, the Laker defense held the Tigers scoreless in the final 2:44 to come away with the victory, as Oswego State improved to 17-3 and SUNY Cobleskill fell to 9-13.

The Lakers held a six-point, 22-16 advantage with 11:05 remaining in the first half after Kevin Kucel fed Chris Gilkes for a layup, but the Tigers scored the next 11 points to go ahead, 27-22, as Oswego State committed three turnovers during the stretch.  Head coach Adam Stockwell's squad managed to go into the locker room at halftime trailing 33-31.

Early in the second half, the Lakers rattled off eight straight points in less than two minutes to take their largest lead of the game at 50-43.  However, SUNY Cobleskill countered again with a 12-2 run to regain a slim three-point margin.  The Tigers clung to a 62-59 lead with 2:44 to play, but went cold from the floor.

Burridge sank two shots from the charity stripe with 57 seconds remaining to pull Oswego State to within one point.  SUNY Cobleskill missed a free throw seconds later, as Conor Monaghan came down with the defensive rebound.  The Lakers were unable to convert on the ensuing possession, but the rebound went off the Tigers, giving Oswego State another opportunity with 16 seconds left.  Burridge received the inbounds pass and was able to hit the eventual game-winning shot.  SUNY Cobleskill had one last shot, but a three-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer.

Both squads shot well from the floor as the Lakers went 28-for-56 (50.0 percent), while the Tigers went 27-for-51 (52.9 percent).  Burridge paced Oswego State with 18 points, while Hayden Ward chipped in 13, Ryan Sheridan added 11, and Chris Gilkes contributed 10.  Point guard Sean Michele dished out seven assists followed by Monaghan and Kucel, who recorded four apiece.  SUNY Cobleskill was led by Damon Franklin's 13 points, while Brandon Doherty and Carl Thomas poured in 12 points each.

The Lakers travel to the North Country this weekend to face Potsdam and Plattsburgh.
