Farmington starts hot, stops Green Mountain

FARMINGTON -- The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team stormed out to a 21-2 start on its way to a 73-45 victory over Green Mountain College in North Atlantic Conference action tonight at Dearborn Gymnasium.

The Beavers (8-11 overall, in NAC) are slated to host Castleton State College Saturday at 2 p.m. The Eagles slipped to 0-13 (0-8).

Tonight's victory was the 399th in the career of Farmington head coach Dick Meader. In 34 seasons of coaching at Thomas College and the University of Maine at Farmington, Meader has a record of 399-455.

Eric Taylor (Oakland, Maine) scored 29 points and pulled down 12 rebounds -- both game highs -- for the Beavers. Taylor netted 10 points in the 21-2 open and scored 10 points to start the second half as the Farmington salted away the contest with a 16-4 run out of intermission. Roy Burdin (Guilford, Maine) added eight points as 13 Beavers got into the scoring column.

Kenneth Williams(Fort Meyers, Fla.) turned in a double-double for Green Mountainwith 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Malik Hale (Springfield, Vt.) added 12 points and Ben LaCure (Hudson, Mass.) pitched in with 10 points.

After an exchange of baskets to open the game, Taylor and the Beavers ran off the next 19 points of the contest to take a 21-2 advantage with 12:15 left until intermission. Green Mountain ended the Farmington rush with a Patrick Dunn (Schenectady, N.Y.) free throw, but Pet Sumner (Cramerton, N.C.) canned a trey to make it 25-3 with 8:41 left in the half. The Beavers held the Eagles without a field goal for more than 11 minutes as the hosts went into the break with a 40-19 advantage.

Taylor collected a layup on four straight trips to highlight a 18-4 start to the second half that was capped by a Burdin jumper with 14:00 remaining in the game for a 58-23 command for Farmington. The Beaver reserves logged quality minutes down the stretch in preserving the 73-45 victory for Farmington.
