Final surge gets Hobart by Union 72-64

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The Hobart basketball team ended the night on an 11-2 run to slip past Union 72-64 in the Viniar Athletic Center. Junior forward Matt Pebole scored six of his team-high 19 points in the Statesmen's decisive surge.

The Dutchmen's Matt Covucci made a jumper with 4:07 remaining in the game to give his squad a 62-61 lead. The only other lead Union held was a 3-0 edge thanks to Keven Donohue's 3-pointer to start the night's scoring.

Pebole put the Statesmen (15-4, 7-1) back in front for good with a jumper at the 3:52 mark. The Dutchmen missed from long range at the other end of the floor and Pebole made them pay with a layup for a 65-62 lead.

Rusmir Dzanko scored for Union (9-11, 1-8) to make a 1-point game with 1:45 to go. Hobart tried to stretch its lead to four on a 3-point try, but misfired. Fortunately, Pebole was there for the rebound and the put back to make it a 67-64 game with 67 seconds left.

Union tried to tie the game, but the attempt was off the mark and the Statesmen grabbed the carom. The Dutchmen were forced to foul and Hobart put the game away at the free throw line. The Statesmen made 5-of-6 at the charity stripe in the final 23 seconds.

Hobart led by as many as eight points on the way to a 33-29 halftime lead. After the break, the Statesmen led by as many as 13, but Union refused to go quietly. A 15-2 run, capped by back-to-back baskets by Dzanko, wiped out Hobart's double-digit lead, setting up the drama of the final four minutes.

Sophomore guard Stefan Thompson joined Pebole in double digits, finishing with 10 points and a game-high seven assists. Senior guard Tim Llewellyn added nine points, all from behind the 3-point arc, four assists, a game-high three steals, and a team-high two blocked shots.

Donohue led Union with 19 points, while Covucci posted a double-double on 13 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out. Evan Croll chipped in 12 points for the Dutchmen.

Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 5, when the Statesmen visit Skidmore. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. Fans can follow the action on the Skidmore website with Live Stats.
