Cougars Late Surge Too Much As Bulldogs Fall 83-76

More news about: Brooklyn

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball Team (10-10, 6-4 CUNYAC) had their two-game conference win streak snapped on Wednesday evening as they fell to visiting Medgar Evers (10-10, 8-2 CUNYAC), in a see-saw affair that saw each team post double-digit leads.

The Cougars were in control early, opening the game on a 9-0 run, sparked by a couple of Jerrel Deare baskets.  BC finally got on the board with a Ahmad Hemingway bucket, but Medgar answered with a thunderous dunk from Winston Douglas to up their lead to 11-2.

Medgar would increase their first-half lead to as many as 16, 29-13, on a Robert Johnson jumper with 8:23 remaining, but it was Brooklyn's turn to take control of the game as the first period wound down.

A three-point bucket from Jose Arroyo got theings going for the Bulldogs, and then Tyshawn Russell and Amil John went to work, scoring a combined 16 points over the final 6:15 of the half, igniting the 23-6 run, giving their team a 36-35 halftime advantage.

Early in the second half there was more of the same for BC as a two-handed dunk from John opened the lead to nine, 50-41, the Bulldogs' biggest of the game, with 14:43 remaining.

Medgar went to a bigger lineup to try and gain the advantage in the paint, however they were unable to capitalize on some easy opportunities and could only cut the lead to five, 50-45, after Douglas cleaned up his own miss and converted an easy two.

Brooklyn's transition game began to start paying dividends as Russell scored on consecutive baskets and then after a missed Medgar three, Kavon Baker scored to give the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the game, a 58-48 advantage with 11:13 to play.

It was at this point that the Cougars regained some confidence and control of the basketball game.  Another Douglas dunk cut the lead to eight and consecutvie three-pointers from Johnson and Tony Sims cut the deficit to only two, 58-56.

Baker pushed the lead back to three after a made free throw, but the Cougars' James Gilmore knocked down another three to tie the game at 59 with 7:51 remaining.  After another missed opportunity by Brooklyn, Medgar's Jovan Deare was fouled and converted on both free throws to give his team a lead they would not relinquish.

The Cougars went up by as many as 11 and were not seriously contested down the stretch.

Russell led BC with a game-high 25 points, while John chipped in with 17.  Baker and Arroyo played big minutes off the bench, combining for 13 points and four assists.

Medgar's balanced scoring attack was led by Gilmore who turned in a standout all-around performance with 20 points, seven boards and five assists.  Each of Medgar's starters scored in double-figures, while they shot 53% from the field and outrebounded the hosts, 40-29.

Brooklyn will remain at home for their third game at the West Quad this week as they host New Jersey City University on Saturday at 3:00 pm.   Medgar will host York on Friday at 8 pm in a big conference showdown.
