PAXTON, Mass. -- Junior De La Hoz (Lawrence, Mass.) poured in 29
points and Anthony Click (Springfield, Mass.) recorded a
triple-double as Anna Maria College held off the University of New
England for a 94-85 The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's
basketball win Saturday at the Fuller Center.
Down 15 (82-67) with 2:13 remaining, the Nor'easters came storming
back and got as close as five (89-84) in the final minute.
De La Hoz buried seven 3-pointers on his way to his game-high 29
points. Click filled out the stat sheet in impressive fashion,
scoring 10 points, grabbing 14 rebounds, dishing out 12 assists and
coming up with three steals.
The AMCATS (10-7, 4-1 TCCC) also received a strong performance
from Chris Pinsonault (Marlboro, Mass.), who had 19 points, six
assists and three steals.
Marcus
Winn (Austin, Texas) scored 24 points to lead the way for
UNE (2-15, 0-5). Winn had five 3-point field goals off the bench.
Charles
Fenner (Bronx, N.Y.) went for 21 points and forced five
steals while J.D.
Winn (Austin, Texas) established a career high with 13
points, including three buckets from beyond the arc.
After a fairly even first 10 minutes of the contest, Anna Maria
went on a 7-0 run to open up a 33-21 advantage with 6:26
remaining. The AMCATS would go on to lead 45-36 at the break,
thanks in large part to four treys by De La Hoz.
The hosts started strong in the final frame, outscoring UNE 15-2
over the opening 6:22 to forge a 60-38 cushion.
Anna Maria continued to cruise and would hold a 17-point
lead (76-59) with 4:33 on the clock.
From there the Nor'easters made things interesting, ripping off a
22-10 run capped by a J.D. Winn three-ball at the 52 second mark to
pull within five (86-81).
Three free throws by Pinsonault were negated by another
three-pointer by Marcus Winn with 24 ticks left, but De La Hoz
added a pair of free throws and a layup to help secure the win.
Anna Maria shot a red-hot 61.1 percent (33 of 54) on the afternoon
to help overcome 24 turnovers. Big Blue knocked down a total of 14
three-point field goals -- seven in each half.
UNE will be seeking its first conference win this coming Thursday
(Jan. 27) when Regis College comes to town for an 8 p.m. start.
