Falcons shoot past Edgewood College

MEQUON, Wis. – When the Edgewood College men's basketball team traveled to Concordia University Wisconsin, something had to give as the game pitted the conference's highest scoring offense against the stingiest defense. The Falcons came out firing and didn't look back, shooting 60.0 percent in their 81-66 victory, dropping the Eagles to 7-2 in Northern Athletics Conference play.

The Falcons (14-2, 10-0 NAC) jumped out to quick 10-4 lead after Mitchell Schneider made a three-point basket from the right corner. However, Ben Wisniewski answered with a three-point basket of and Tony Cates knocked down a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 10-9.

After Jeff Barczak tied the game at 18 with 11:00 minutes to play in the first half, Concordia Wisconsin went on a 7-2 run to take a 25-20 lead before the Eagles (11-6, 7-2 NAC) answered. Kent Faurote started 7-0 Edgewood College run with a jump shot before Barczak followed with a layup and Cashton Craig capped the run with a three-point basket.

Leading 30-29, the Falcons scored nine straight points, earning their largest lead of the first half, 39-29. However, the Eagles scored the final five points of the half on a Craig three-pointer and a pair of Faurote free throws to make the halftime score 39-34.

The Eagles cut the deficit to four at 48-44 with more than 15 minutes to play, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way. Concordia Wisconsin then scored the five points to open up a 53-44 lead.

The deficit swelled to 11 points before the Eagles tried to get back within striking distance and with 8:08 left, Barczak made a layup to make the score 59-54, but the Falcons had an answer again and stretched the lead back to nine points.

With just under four minutes left, Faurote made a jump shot to pull the Eagles within nine points, but Luke Doedens put the game out of reach when he nailed back-to-back three-point baskets to put the Falcons up 75-60 with just over three minutes remaining. The Falcons led by as many as 17 points before Wisniewski made a jump shot with 27 seconds left to make the final score 81-66.

Concordia Wisconsin shot a blistering 60.0 percent (30-for-50) from the floor, including 11-for-19 (57.9 percent) from three point range. The Eagles shot 49.0 percent (24-for-49) from the field and 31.3 percent (5-for-16) from deep. Edgewood College also went 13-for-13 from the free throw line, marking their best performance of the season.

Faurote led four Eagle scorers in double figures with 19 points while Barczak scored 16 points off the bench. Craig scored 14 points and Wisniewski chipped in with 10 points. Faurote also led the team with eight rebounds while Derek Nkemnji handed out four assists. Schneider led the Falcons with 20 points while Luke Doedens scored 18 points, all coming in the second half.
