Lyerly’s Double-Double Leads Maritime To 57-45 Victory Over Bard

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 18 2011) – Senior Quamel Lyerly (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) led all players with 23 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double in the last five games to pace the Maritime men's basketball team to a 57-45 victory over visiting Bard College Tuesday night at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The Privateers, who pick up their first win of 2011, improve to 6-9 overall (4-6 Skyline), while the Raptors fall to 1-14 (1-9 Skyline).

Lyerly also recorded a game-best five steals in the game, while shooting 61.1-percent from the field (11-for-18), including a jumper in the paint while falling down in the second half. Junior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) chipped in with 17 points and senior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) had 11 points to round out the Maritime double-digit scorers. Hurley also had eight rebounds, while McSloy led all players with five assists.

Despite the Raptors starting the game on a 7-2 run, the Privateers held Bard to just 29.6-percent shooting from the field in the first half (8-for-27), while shooting 40.0-percent themselves (12-for-30). Maritime took an eight-point advantage to the locker room, 27-19, behind 12 points by Lyerly in the opening period.

In the second half, the Raptors' sophomore Frank Stortini nailed a 3-pointer to begin the scoring and cut their deficit down to just five points, 27-22. Play was back and forth from that point, until Bard came within four points, 43-39, after two free throws by Stortini. That was the closest the Raptors came to tying the score, as Maritime held on for the victory.

Bard was led by senior Chrstian Maghella, who scored 17 points and brought down nine boards. Stortini finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Jeremy Arnstein contributed 10 points.

The Privateers return to action on Thursday, Jan. 20, when they close out their three-game homestand against the Fighting Blue Jays of NYU-Poly. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
