Hot shooting lifts Edgewood College over Regents

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Edgewood College men's basketball team used a combination of hot shooting and balanced scoring for the second consecutive game on Saturday afternoon at Rockford College. The Eagles placed at least four scores in double figures and shot over 55 percent in their second consecutive contest, a 73-59 victory over the Regents.

After the Regents (6-8, 3-4 NAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead, the two teams went back and forth with neither team leading by more than three points until the Eagles went on run with less than nine minutes left in the first half. With the scored tied a 15, Tony Cates sparked a 6-0 spurt with a two of his nine points and Jeff Barczak scored consecutive buckets to put the Eagles (10-5, 6-1 NAC) up 21-15 with 6:02 left in the frame.

The Eagles then extended their lead to 12 points, their largest of the half, twice in the final 1:21 of the half and took a 34-22 lead into halftime. Ben Wisniewski scored the Eagles' final five points of the half. First he made a three-point basket, and then knocked down a pair of free throws.

The lead quickly reached a game-high 19 points in the second half as the Eagles opened the stanza on a 9-2 run to take 43-24 lead with just over 17 minutes left. Cates scored four points in the run, while Kent Faurote converted a three-point play to cap the run.

After that, the Regents began to shave points off the deficit and finally cut the Eagle lead to single digits with just over six minutes to play. However, with under five minutes to play, Faurote answered with back-to-back buckets to push the lead back 12 points.

Cashton Craig put the Eagles up 17 when he connected on the Eagles' third three-point attempt of the game with 47 seconds left. Rockford's Paul Hall answered with a three-point basket with 25 seconds left to make the final score 73-59 and move the Eagles to 6-1 in Northern Athletics Conference play.

Faurote registered his second double-double in the last three games. He scored a season-high 20 points to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds. Wisniewski tallied 17 points, nine of which came from the free throw line where he went 9-for-13. Craig scored 12 points, all coming in the second half while Barczak scored 11 points off the bench.

The Eagles shot 55.8 percent from the field and are now shooting 50.0 percent for the season. Edgewood College also played good defense, holding the Regents to 38.0 percent shooting from the floor. The Eagles also out rebounded the Regents, 36-22 while Rockford committed 16 turnovers to the Eagles' 18 giveaways.

Hall led the Regents with 19 points while Robert Malone was the only other Regent in double figures with 11 points.

The Eagles will next be in action on Tuesday when the travel to Maranatha Baptist. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
