ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University men's basketball team defeated visiting Elmira College, 81-72, Tuesday evening.

The Saxons held a commanding 44-25 lead heading into intermission, after shooting 48 percent from floor for the half. AU finished shooting 46 percent, and Elmira shot 42 percent from the floor.

Senior guard Mike Stopera scored a game-high 26 points and had two assists to lead AU. Senior guard Gary Kwiecien scored 15 points, adding six rebounds and seven assists, and junior forward Derek Lewis scored 10 points and had seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Sean Curran chipped in 13 points and sophomore center Brian Bobo picked up a game-high 13 rebounds.

Zach Simpson scored 24 points and had nine rebounds to pace Elmira (1-12, 0-4 Empire 8). Bobby DiPiazza netted 22 points and had eight rebounds.

Alfred (7-5, 2-2 Empire 8) is in action next on Jan. 15, at 8 p.m. at Hartwick.
