Bison drop road contest to SUNY Cobleskill

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – Gallaudet University men's basketball sophomores Danny Kelly (Strongsville, Ohio) and Jocus Houston (Baton Rouge, La.) set new career highs for points scored in an 83-75 road loss against SUNY Cobleskill on Sunday in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game.

Kelly poured in 15 of his game-high 26 points in the second half. The forward scored 26 points in 24 minutes played as he made 12-of-15 shots from the field and added 12 rebounds. Houston scored the second most points in the game with 18. Gallaudet (7-5, 4-3 NEAC) had one other player reach double digits as junior forward Layton Seeber (Champaign, Ill.) scored 13 points and added five assists, four rebounds and three blocks in the loss.

SUNY Cobleskill (5-7, 5-1) led 34-30 at halftime after a very closely contested first half. GU tied the game three different times in the opening half. The Bison led briefly 26-25 at the 4:04 mark before the intermission.

The Bison pulled to within five of the Fighting Tigers late in the second half after Seeber made a free throw to cut into the lead, 65-60. Cobleskill took off on a 12-2 run from there and led 77-62 with three minutes to play. The Bison didn't back down and answered with a 13-1 of their own as the Buff and Blue only trailed 78-75 with 39 seconds left in regulation. Time ran out on the Bison comeback as the Fighting Tigers ascended into first-place in the conference.

Cobleskill was led by Damon Franklin (nine rebounds) and Haneef Scott (six rebounds) who scored 16 points each and Craig Orner netted 12 of his 14 points in the second half. The Fighting Tigers shot 52.6 percent from the field in the win.

Gallaudet returns home to host Lancaster Bible College on Wednesday, January 12, as the afternoon game will tip at 2 p.m. The Gallaudet University athletics department is offering free admission to all GU faculty, staff and teachers to both basketball games on Wednesday (Jan. 12) with a valid ID.
