Big Second Half Pushes Mavs Past Hilbert

More news about: Medaille

(Buffalo, NY) – After watching Hilbert lead for most of the games opening 25 minutes the Medaille College men's basketball team used some key halftime adjustments, better shooting and stingy defense to surge past the Hawks (77-62) in AMCC action.

The Mavs found themselves down by four (31-27) at the break and then outscored the Hawks (50-31) in the second half.  A key factor in the win was the play of senior Joe Mogavero (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) who played one of the best games of his career as he had a game high (19) points on (8 of 15) shooting while also grabbing a team high (14) rebounds, seven of which came of the offensive glass.  He even chipped in with three blocked shots, two assists and a steal.

Sophomore Tyler Stevens (Depew, NY/Depew) came off the bench to knock down three huge 3-pointers, each of which came at critical moments in the game.  He finished with (12) points.  Senior guard Ricky Reed (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) tallied (13) points, pulled down (9) boards and dished out (3) assists in the victory.

The Mavs rebounded from a dismal first half shooting performance (22.9%) as they connected on (48.4%) of their shots in the second half and they won the battle of the paint as they held a (38-22) scoring advantage in the lane.  The charity stripe played a critical role in this game as well as the Mavs made thirteen more trips to the free throw line and shot at a much higher percentage once there.

The win gets Medaille back on track and they are now (8-4) overall and (4-1) in AMCC play.  They will host Mt. Aloysius College on Saturday (1/8) at 5:00pm in the Sullivan Center.
