Brooklyn Cruises Past St. Joe's (Brooklyn), 89-65

Brooklyn, NY --- Senior Ahmad Hemingway and sophomore Steven Grant each recorded a double-double, as the Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team cruised past borough rival Saint Joseph's College (Brooklyn) by a score of 89-65 in non-conference action tonight at Brooklyn Technical High School. With the win, the Bulldogs even their overall record to 5-5 on the season, while the Bears fall to 2-10 overall on the year.

Hemingway finished the night with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Grant chipped in with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Brooklyn controlled much of the first half as the Bulldogs shot 56.3% (18-for-32) from the field, while also going 4-for-8 from beyond the arc to take a 46-38 halftime lead. St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) would not go down lightly, however, as the Bears stayed in the game going 14-for-35 from the field (40%), while converting on 5-for-11 from three. Down by one, 7-6, with 14:04 remaining before the break, the Bulldogs used an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 14-7 advantage as Brooklyn would not relinquish its lead for the rest of the half. Senior Daniel Velasquez helped key the early run with a pair of three pointers, while Junior Tyshawn Russell paced the Bulldogs offense in the opening half scoring 14 of his 16 points on the night in the first stanza.

The second half featured much of the same as the first, as the Bulldogs continued to maintain control of the game. Brooklyn picked up its defensive intensity in the closing half holding the Bears to just 28.6% (8-for-28) shooting from the field in the second stanza, as the Bulldogs would go on to outscore St. Joe's (Brooklyn) by a score of 43-27 in the second half. Up by eight, 70-62, with just 4:10 left in the game, Brooklyn utilized a 12-1 run over a two-minute span to take a 19-point lead, 82-63, with 2:06 remaining, putting the game out of reach as the Bulldogs would go on to take the 89-65 victory.

The Bears were led by Johnny Mendez who scored a team-leading 19 points. Donald Coleman finished the night with 16 points and 10 rebounds to record the double-double, while Antoine Forehand chipped in with 11 points.

Brooklyn also controlled the battle of the glass as they out-rebounded St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) by a 53-34 margin.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Wednesday, January 5th, as Brooklyn will travel to Jamaica, NY to take on the Cardinals of York College in a key CUNY Athletic Conference South Division match-up. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
