The Rivier College Raiders (5-3 Overall) connected on over 56 percent of their attempts from the floor on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Beavers of the City College of New York (2-10 Overall, 0-2 CUNYAC) by a score of 87-59 in the consolation game of the Residence Inn Greenbelt Classic played at Catholic University's DuFour Gymnasium in Washington, DC. The loss was the 10th consecutive defeat suffered by CCNY.

In the victory for the Raiders, Joe Granato came off of the bench to contribute a game-high 15 points in 13 minutes of action. All of his points came via the three-point shot as he connected on five of his six attempts from downtown while also ripping down three rebounds. Tom Poitras added 14 points and four caroms, and Don Poitras hit on six of his seven attempts from the floor to account for 13 points, four rebounds, and four blocked shots.

Despite the loss for the Beavers, Brendan Barile played well off of the bench, contributing 13 points and hitting on three of his six attempts from beyond the three-point arc. He also added three assists and three rebounds as well. Idris Alford had 12 points on the afternoon, and Kenny Rubenstein – despite just connecting on just one of his six attempts from the floor – nailed nine of 10 from the charity stripe and finished with 11 points.

Elisha Robinson hit on a jumper with 17:08 remaining in the first half to give Rivier an early 4-2 lead, and the Raiders would not look back from there, never again relinquishing their advantage. Rivier took its biggest lead of the first half at the 3:03 mark of the period when they went up by a score of 46-20, and eventually jogged into the locker room at halftime with a commanding 21 point edge, leading 48-27.

In the second half, the Raiders would eventually balloon their lead up to 39 points – 79-40 – with just under seven minutes remaining, before eventually going on for the 28 point victory. In the win, Rivier connected on 56.4 percent of their shots from the field (31-55) while the Beavers hit on 33.9 percent of theirs (19-56). The Raiders out-rebounded CCNY 40-27, and blocked five shots to City College's one. Following the loss, head coach Andy Stampfel remained optimistic about his team's chances to turn things around.

"This team is working very hard, so it's not as if the effort isn't there, because it is," the long-time CCNY skipper said. "We have 13 games remaining in this season, and 11 of those are conference games, so we still certainly have time to straighten things out and get to where we want to be. Right now, we're struggling, but we're only halfway through the season, and we still believe that we can be better."

The Beavers resume conference action this Wednesday evening as CCNY welcomes the Hunter College Hawks to the Nat Holman Gymnasium. Start-time for the conference contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
