DANVILLE, Ky. – Scott Schnelle totaled 23 points and 14 rebounds as Ohio Northern slipped past Allegheny, 72-60, in the consolation game of the Papa John's/Country Heart Inn Tournament. A huge disparity in free throws attempts signaled the biggest difference in Wednesday's tilt where the Polar Bears finished plus-15.

Ohio Northern (6-5) closed 19-of-28 at the charity stripe – both season highs against the Gators' defense – while Allegheny converted all four of its trips. The Polar Bears did score their final six points at the foul line as the Gators looked to extend the game. Sophomore Devone McLeod, who scored 14 points in the loss, sank a three to pull the Gators within six (64-58) with three minutes to play while a jumper by rookie Ryan Stanko marked the Blue and Gold's last push before dropping its fourth straight date against a perennial NCAA power.

McLeod and Stanko were two of four Allegheny players who reached double figures in scoring. Junior James Ness led the attack with 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting while Stanko and junior Donte Briscoe each contributed 10. Briscoe also hauled in 10 rebounds en route to his fourth double-double of the season.

The Gators and Polar Bears were locked in a tight game until Ohio Northern utilized a 9-0 run with seven minutes left in the first half to grab a 28-19 lead. Senior Seth Eisner supplied the momentary equalizer with a three, although a pair of fouls by Ness just 15 seconds apart forced a change in the lineup that triggered the only significant run of the night. With Ness out of the lineup, the Polar Bears controlled the glass and slowly expanded their lead to 38-25 by the end of the half.

Allegheny proved resilient in the second frame by cutting the advantage to single digits on numerous occasions, although they were never closer than when McLeod's late three put the Gators in position to complete the comeback. Ohio Northern scored just one field goal in the final four minutes, but finished 10-of-12 from the line during the closing stretch to keep the Gators at bay.

NOTES: Wednesday marked the first-ever meeting between Allegheny and Ohio Northern in men's basketball…the Polar Bears enjoyed a 25-6 advantage in second-chance points…rookie D'Andre Corbin dished out a game-high four assists but was held scoreless for the first time in his college career (0-4 FG)…Donte Briscoe had at least three blocks in a game for the third time this season.
