Marietta extends win streak to ten with 89-78 victory over Wilmington

MARIETTA, Ohio — Freshman Tyler Hammond (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) scored a career-high 22 points and dished out five assists and three teammates also reached double figures to lead the Marietta College men's basketball team to its tenth straight victory, an 89-78 Ohio Athletic Conference win over visiting Wilmington College Wednesday (Dec. 22) night inside a packed Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers also remained alone atop the league standings with a mark of 5-0, while the Quakers fell to 3-6 overall and 0-5 in the OAC.

Junior Kevin Knab (Lakewood/Lakewood) contributed 12 points, seven rebounds and three blocks and junior Trevor Halter (Malvern/Malvern) had 10 points and a game-best eight boards. Sophomore Jason Humphrey (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) also finished with 11 points, junior Conner Kilpatrick (Bowling Green/Bowling Green) collected nine points and sophomores Jacob Owens (Mansfield/Mansfield) and J.J. Martin (Huntington, W.Va./Huntington) both had seven points. In addition, freshman Andrew Seaman (Hillsboro/Peebles ) sparked a key first half run and filled up the stat sheet with six points, five rebounds and four assists in 11 minutes.

Antonio Bowman led Wilmington with 22 points, eight assists and four steals. Malcolm Heard II collected 14 points and eight rebounds. Tyler White had 13 points and Brandon Candella finished with 12 points.

Marietta finished 32-of-59 (54.1%) from the floor, including 8-of-19 (42.1%) from long range. Wilmington went 32-of-74 (43.2%) from the field, including 4-of-12 (33.3%) from beyond the arc. The Pioneers held a 41-39 edge on the boards and overcame 15 turnovers, while the Quakers had 12.

The lead changed hand four times in the first nine minutes of the game. A jumper just outside the paint from Kilpatrick gave Marietta the advantage for good, 12-11, with 10:57 remaining in the half. The Pioneers steadily added to its lead and took a 37-26 advantage into the intermission.

Wilmington went on a 6-0 run to pull within four points, 37-33, 90 seconds into the final stanza. Marietta then scored 29 of the next 36 points to boost its lead to a game-high 20 points, 64-44, with 11:05 left on the clock and cruised to the 11-point win.

Marietta is back in action Dec. 29 when it visits Redlands (Calif.) for a non-conference match-up at 10:30 p.m. EST. The Pioneers will then visit La Verne (Calif) Dec. 30, also at 10:30 p.m. EST.
