Hawks Win 54-49 on the Road Against Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. ---- The Huntingdon College men's basketball team won 54-49 against Covenant College on Saturday afternoon. After a 25-25 tie at the half, the Hawks largest lead was 13 points during the second period in the victory.

In a close first half, there were ten lead changes and the largest lead of which was five points by Huntingdon. Covenant's Sam Bowman made a layup with one second left in the period to tie the game 25-25.

After three early lead changes in the second half, Huntingdon was able to score six straight points, capped by junior D'Awvalo Turnipseed's three-pointer with 4:57 left in the game. Turnipseed's shot gave the Hawks a 13 point lead late in the game.

The Scots could not recover from the 13 point deficit, but managed to cut the Hawks' lead down to four points with five seconds left in the game. Huntingdon's Deshawn Williams converted 1-of-2 free throws with five seconds remaining. Covenant's last second three-point shot failed and the Hawks' finished with a five point lead, 54-49.

Junior D'Awvalo Turnipseed paced the team with 11 points, including 3-of-6 beyond the three-point line. Senior James Daniels recorded a double-double, with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the game. While Senior Adrian Williams and Ephriam Hudson each posted 10 points and 6 rebounds in the win.

Despite the loss, Covenant held a 46-38 advantage on the glass. The Hawks' converted 36.4 percent of its shots, hitting 16-of-44, while the Scots finished 16-of-59 (27.1%). The Hawks' hit 36.4 percent (8-of-22) of its three-point shots, compared to Covenant's 15 percent (3-of-20).

Covenant (1-8) was led by Kacey Chambers and Sam Bowman, who each finished with 12 points in the loss.

Huntingdon (3-4) travels to Rome, Ga. on Tuesday, Dec. 14, to take on Berry College (4-1). Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
