KAILUA, Hawaii - Thousands of Hawaiian tourists every year soak up the Islands' warm weather and amazing vistas, but apparently Hawaii can also improve a jump shot. The Edgewood College men's basketball team found some island magic on Friday night, shooting 68 percent, the second highest field goal percentage in school history, from the field in an 83-56 victory over Knox College (1-8) in the first game of their Hawaiian adventure.
Edgewood College threatened to burn down Kalaheo High School's gym with their first half shooting performance. The Eagles hit 20 of 26 shots (76.9 percent) and scored 53 points in the first 20 minutes. Edgewood College made six of their first eight shots in rolling out to a 14-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game.
Sophomore Cashton Craig had his first two buckets during that run on the way to a career night. Craig went 10-for-11 (90.9 percent) from the field, the second highest field goal percentage in school history. The transfer from Madison, made all four of his three-point attempts for the game and finished with 24 points. Jeff Barczak scored three straight buckets midway through the first half to give Edgewood College (6-4) a 34-16 lead. Barczak, a senior, went 7-for-9 from the field and finished with 17 points. He also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds after missing the Eagles' last two games due to illness.
Derek Nkemnji, the Northern Athletics Conference's leader in field goal percentage, made all five of his shots from the field and finished with 13 points. Nkemnji is now shooting 68.8 percent from the field for the season. Fellow junior Ben Wisniewski added 13 points and a team-high five assists. Wisniewski is now 44 points short of 1,000 for his career.
Edgewood College will have Sunday off to enjoy some sightseeing, before returning to the gym for a Monday date with the University of Dubuque.
