Brooklyn Defeats Marymount, 62-54

Arlington, VA ---- Playing in the consolation game of the 2010 Marymount-Marine Corps Tip-Off Tournament, the Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team defeated the host Saints of Marymount University by a score of 62-54 earlier today at the Verizon Sports Arena in Arlington, VA. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 2-1 on the year; while the Saints fall to 0-3 on the season. 

With the Bulldogs leading by one, 10-9, with 15:40 remaining in the first half, Brooklyn used a 7-0 run to take a 17-9 advantage at the 13:16 mark, their largest lead of the half. Senior Darnell Cudjoe (Brooklyn, NY/Murray Bergtraum) helped spark the run scoring four of the seven points. Cudjoe would finish with eight points in the half. Marymount would use a 14-6 run of its own late in the half to take one point lead, 24-23, with 3:58 remaining before halftime. However, a jumper from senior Ahmad Hemingway (Brooklyn, NY/Curtis) and a three-pointer from junior Amil John (Brooklyn, NY/South Shore) gave the Bulldogs a 28-26 advantage heading into the break. 

After trading baskets to start the second half and trailing by three, 36-33 with 16:56 remaining in the game, Brooklyn used a 16-0 run to take a 13-point lead, 49-36 with 11:29 left in the game. The Saints, however, would show their resiliency using a 14-2 run of their own, cutting their deficit to 51-50 at the 3:03 mark. The Bulldogs would not be denied the victory in the end, as Brooklyn closed the game on an 11-4 run to take home the 62-54 win. 

Hemingway led the way for the Bulldogs with 17 points, while John and junior Tyshawn Russell (Jamaica, NY/Holy Cross) each netted 14 points apiece. For his efforts, Russell was named to the All-Tournament Team. Sophomore Steven Grant (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth) chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds, while Cudjoe finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

Marymount was led by Reed Scott who scored a game-high 21 points, to go along with seven rebounds. Bryan DeBruin chipped in with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Jonathan DeLao finished with 10 points off the bench.

The Bulldogs' stingy defense forced the Saints into 21 turnovers on the day.

Brooklyn returns to action this Tuesday, November 23rd, when the Bulldogs will host the Panthers of Purchase College in a key non-conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the West Quad Center Gymnasium.
