Central rolls up 107-52 triumph

It took nearly 3 minutes for the Central College men's basketball team to score Monday night against Faith Baptist. The Dutch played the next 37 minutes like they were trying to make up for it, roaring to a 107-52 non-conference win.

Guard Demarco Turner came off the bench and sparked the offense once again, knocking down all six of his 3-point tries, including five in the first half, and finished with 23 points in 21 minutes of action. He set a new school single-game record for most 3's without a miss.

It was the first time Central (5-3) topped the century mark since a 104-61 triumph at Monmouth (Ill.) Nov. 21, 2009 and the most points the Dutch have scored since a 118-92 victory over MacMurray (Ill.) Dec. 18, 2004.

But it didn't start like a banner night. Faith Baptist (5-8) jumped to a 9-0 lead. Central's James Chapline cracked the scoring column with a layup with 17:09 left in the half but Faith Baptist extended its lead to 12-2 before the Dutch turned things around. Central went on a 23-5 burst in the next 7 minutes for a 25-17 lead and sprinted to a 59-36 advantage at halftime.

"I told the team my worst fear had come true," coach Mike Boschee said. "Faith Baptist did the same thing to William Penn at the start and (Penn) had to take a timeout.

"But I was really pleased with how we responded to it. When you face something difficult and are challenged, you need to handle it in a positive way and I felt we did that."

Even with the shaky start, Central hit 65.7 percent from the field in the first half and shot 58.1 percent for the night to Faith Baptist's 33.9 percent.

Turner also had five assists and four steals. Chapline had 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists while forward Jack Bruns also had 12 points. Guard K.J. Cool came off the bench to hit a career-best 10 points. Freshman forward Matt Greenfield was Central's top rebounder for the second straight outing with eight and also scored eight points. Guard Adrian Cave had nine points and four assists.

Central held a commanding 49-25 advantage on the glass.

"I felt like we played well offensively all night," Boschee said. "We had some careless passes at times but (Faith Baptist) plays a zone that's a little different than what we're used to and they got in the passing lanes.

"But I was pretty pleased overall. I wanted us to play more unselfishly and I thought we accomplished that. I saw a lot of extra passes and guys trying to find each other."

Central expects a sterner challenge Thursday in a non-conference game with Bethany Lutheran (Minn.) at Mankato, Minn. starting at 7:30 p.m. The Vikings are 3-3 and own an 84-76 victory at Wartburg College.

"Bethany's a tough guard for us," Boschee said. "They're really good in transition and really good one-on-one. They'll be a good test for us."

Central defeated Bethany Lutheran at Pella last year 87-58 and holds a 3-2 lead in the teams' all-time series.
