BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Matt Johnson scored a career-high 28 points to lead the University of Chicago men's basketball team to an 83-78 upset over second-ranked and previously-undefeated Illinois Wesleyan University Saturday at the Shirk Center.

Johnson scored 16 of his points in the first half as the Maroons built a 41-32 lead at the intermission. Chicago (2-5) led by as many as 11 (30-19) in the opening period.

Chicago maintained the edge during the first 10 minutes of the second stanza until aDan Schouten three-pointer put the Titans (6-1) on top 57-56 at the 9:56 mark.

The lead then changed hands nine times until a Johnson three-pointer gave Chicago the lead for good, 73-70, with 3:31 left to play.

Johnson connected on 10 of 18 shots from the field and was 6-for-7 from the foul line to help the Maroons snap a four-game losing skid.

Matt MacKenzie finished with 14 points for the Maroons, while Tom Williams notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.

Sean Johnson led five Titans in double figures with 16 points. Doug Sexauer added 12 points.

Chicago shot 56.6% from the field and 81% from the free throw line.

Chicago returns to action next Saturday at Kalamazoo College.
