Westminster Goes Quietly in PAC Loss to Saint Vincent

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - After being outscored 13-4 in the final six minutes, the Westminster College men's basketball team absorbed a 79-69 loss at home to Saint Vincent Saturday in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action.

The Titans lose their fourth straight game to fall to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in the PAC. Saint Vincent improves to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.

Saint Vincent commanded the boards as the Bearcats held a 52-27 rebound advantage to compensate for the Bearcats committing 26 turnovers to the Titans' 15.

Four Titans scored in double figures led by junior forward Steve Cress with 13 points. Sophomore guard Doug Smith bucketed 12 points for the Titans, followed by freshman Christian Shea with 11 and freshman guard Anthony Thomas with 10.

Thomas posted career highs with seven assists and four steals, while Smith handed out a personal-best five assists.

Five Bearcats scored in double digits led by guard Isaac Turner's game-high 21 points on 8-14 shooting. Guard B.J. McGill sank 17 points and tied a game high with eight rebounds to go with his team-high six assists.

Westminster led by as many as seven points at 28-21 with 7:36 remaining in the first half. Saint Vincent outscored the Titans 23-8 to end the first half with a 44-36 lead.

Early in the second half, Westminster made a 10-0 run to tie the game and the Titans wound up taking their largest lead of the game at three points (62-59) with nine minutes remaining.

After Thomas hit a 3-pointer with six minutes remaining to cut Saint Vincent's lead to 66-65, the Titans missed 12 out of their next 13 field goals while the Bearcats mounted a 12-point lead. Cress hit a shot in the final seconds to make it a 10-point game.

Westminster steps out of conference play Wednesday as it hosts Hiram at 7:30 p.m.
