Majors fall in conference opener 53-68 to Austin

More news about: Millsaps

The Majors jumped out to start the game on a 5-0 run before the 'Roos could find their footing, but Millsaps couldn't keep sustained pressure, allowing Austin to retie the game a few possessions later. The half went back-and-forth the entire 20:00 minutes with neither team able to build more than a six-point lead. A jumper at the buzzer by Brian Merkel halted a mini-run by the 'Roos to pull the Majors within four, 28-32, as time expired.

Millsaps gave up back-to-back buckets to open the second half and could not answer with one of their own until the 16:35 mark. The layup from Jayson Montgomery cut the lead back down to 11, but the Majors got no closer than eight points the rest of the way. The 'Roos led by as many as 17 with 14:25 to play.

Nick Cortese led the Majors with 11 points on the night.  L.V. Sumler pulled in a game-high 11 rebounds, including nine defensive. Austin's Jordan Hancock paced the 'Roos and led all scorers with 20 points.  The Majors were only out-rebounded by three, 33-30. They shot 37 percent from the floor compared to an even 50 percent from the 'Roos thanks to a 27 percent effort in the second half.

The Majors went 6-of-25 from three for 24 percent, but the 'Roos were only better because they took fewer, going 6-of-16. Austin shot 17 free throws on the night and connected with 14 for a blistering 82 percent from the charity stripe. The Majors went 5-of-10 from the line on the night for 50 percent.

The Majors will return to action this Sunday as they host Colorado College in a 2:00 p.m. tipoff in the Hangar Dome.
